LONG ISLAND

LONG ISLAND is a long narrow island belonging to New York State. It is 115 miles long and from 12 to 24 broad. It is located off the shores of New York and Connecticut, from which it is separated by the East River and Long Island Sound. It is low land and much of it is forest and sandy waste land, having great lagoons in the South.

The chief industry here are market-gardening and fisheries, and its oyster-beds are valuable.

Its Principal towns are Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Flushing.
