Lorraine

Lorraine is a historical region in France, was also a district, between Metz and the Vosges. It belonged originally to Germany, became French in 1766. Some parts of Moselle and Meurthe became part of Germany in 1871, while the remaining parts in France became new department named Meurthe-et-Moselle. After 1918 and the Great War, France took over control again of Moselle. Nevertheless, in 1919, and de facto annexation by Nazi Germany during World War II. In mid-20th century, France created its administrative regions and decided to gather Meurthe et Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges into a single region, known as Lorraine. In 2016, under a reorganisation, it became part of the new region Grand Est having four departments Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges.
