Magdala

Magdala was an Abyssinian (modern Ethiopian) hill fortress on a lofty plateau 300 miles South of Massowah. It was captured by Lord Napier, who had been sent in 1868 to rescue certain British subjects held prisoners there, and which he succeeded in doing. The British military destroyed the city. Magdala was the former name of the present village Amba Mariam in Ethiopia's Amhara region, which was the capital of Emperor Tewodros II from 1867 until a British military destroyed the city in 1868.
