Merv
Merv was an oasis city in Turkestan, 60 miles long by 40 broad, producing cereals, cotton, silk, &c. It breeded horses, camels, and sheep, and was an important centre of trade and culture. It had a capital of the same name, on the Transcaspian railway. Human settlements in Merv existed from the 3rd millennium BC until the 18th century AD. By 1888, the city was entirely abandoned. Merv today, is a collection of ruined cities, is in present-day Turkmenistan.Nearby pages
