Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore (1800-74) was the 13th president of the United States from 1850 to 1853. He was a New York Whig. He served in the US House of Representatives during 1833-35 and 1837-43. He became vice-president of the United States in 1849. After the death of the President Zachary Taylor, he succeeded to the presidency in 1850. He enforced the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, which became so unpopular that his Whig Party lost the power in 1853. He advocated compromise on the slavery issue.
