Mopping Up

Mopping up is a term used for the act of making a fire safe after it has been controlled, as by firing small unburned areas between the control line and the edge of a fire, removing unburnt inflammable materials in the area, extinguishing smouldering fires with earth or water, etc. Rarely, if ever, completed until all of the fire has been put out.
