Mrs J Austin

Mrs J Austin (1793-1867), née Sarah Taylor, was an English editor, linguist and translator. She was wife of the John Austin. She executed translations from the German, "Falk's Characteristics of Goethe" for one. She was, like her husband, of the utilitarian school. She was introduced to Carlyle when he first went up to London. Carlyle wrote to his wife of her, "If I 'swear eternal friendship' with any woman here, it will be with her".
