The country was formerly known as ((Burma)). The country was part of British India until 1937, and then became a British colony. It became independent in 1948. Burmese constitutional referendum of 2008 made Burma a Republic. As part of the referendum process, the name of the country was changed from the "Union of Myanmar" to the "Republic of the Union of Myanmar".
