National Memorial

The National Memorial at Port Blair in the capital city of the Union Territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India is comprised of the Cellular Jail and the Monument of 1857 Freedom Movement. The Cellular Jail is standing there as a symbol of brutalities of the British barbarism where revolutionary freedom fighters of the mainland India were kept to serve rigorous sentences. The British began construction of the jail in October 1896 and completed it in 1906. As a mark of respect to the revolutionary freedom fighters, it was dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai on February 11, 1979.

A monument was also erected on August 15, 1957, in Marina Park, a downhill to Cellular Jail, in memory of the revolutionary freedom fighters participating in the 1857 Revolutionary Freedom Movement of India and consequently deported to undergo a jail term here.
