Nawanshahr
Nawanshahr (now Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar) is a district in the State of Punjab in India. Nawanshahr derived its name from its headquarter town of the same name. The district is situated between 31.8° N and 76.7° E.It has area of 125833 hectares consisting of population of 586637 as per 2001 census.
The district has two tehsils, five development blocks, 474 revenue villages, 472 villages (7 uninhabited) and 445 gram panchayats.
History
Nawanshahr district was carved out of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts of Punjab on November 7, 1995.The district headquarter town Nawanshahr is said to have been built during the reign of Alaudin Khilji (1295-1316) by his Afgan Military Chief Nausher Khan. Previously it was called "Nausar" but with the passage of time, the town came to be known "The Nawanshahr".
Its name was changed to Shahid Bhagat Singh district on 29/09/2008.
