Neemuch

Neemuch is a district in the State of Madhya Pradesh in India. It lies between the parallels of latitude 24° 15" - 24°35" North, and between the meridians of longitude 74° 45" - 75° 37" East. It derived its name from the town of the same name which is also its headquarters. Earlier it was called Minuch because Minas had established this city, which in due course of time changed to Nimuch or Neemuch.

Area of this district is 3875 Square Km and the total population is 7,25,457 as per cesus 2001.

There are three tehsils in this district - Neemuch, Jawad and Manasa.

History

Neemuch has been declared as a seperate district by MP Govt as on 30th June 1998. Earlier it was a part of the Mandsaur district.

Neemuch is an ancient city. It found mention in Prithviraj Raso. Maharana Hammir (1301-1364) had transferred this area to his wife's brother Songara.

Britishers had established a military cantonment here in early nineteenth century.
