Nijni-Novgorod

Nijni-Novgorod, also spelled Nizhny Novgorod, is a city in Russia. It is the capital of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The city is situated at the confluence of the Oka with the Volga, 274 miles East of Moscow. It was also the seat of Peter-Paul's Fair, the greatest in the world from the mid-16th century to 1816, which lasted from July to September, attracting merchants from Asia and Europe, and during which the population of the town swells to six or seven times its normal dimensions. The fair ceased in 1929. What is now organised is not fair but simply an exhibition.
