North and Middle Andaman
North and Middle Andaman is a district in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. It lies between 12° and 14° north latitude and between 92° and 94° east longitude. The east and west of the district is occupied by sea. The district headquarters are at Mayabunder town.The district was created on August 17, 2006 along with South Andaman district after abolishing Andamans district. The population of this district as per census of 2011 was 105597. The total area of the district is 3251.85 sq km which was carved out from the old Andamans district, which had an area of 6,408 sq km. As per the census 2011, this district was comprised of two subdivisions - North Andaman with headquarter at Diglipur, and Middle Andaman with headquarter at Mayabunder.
There are 14 inhabited islands in the districts namely (1) East Island (Police post & Light house) (2) Narcondam Island (Police post) (3) Land Fall Island (Police post) (4) North Andaman Island (5) Smith Island (6) Curlew Island (7) Stewart Island (8) Interview Island (9) Aves Island (10) Middle Andaman Island (11) Long Island (12) North Passage Island (13) Strait Island, and (14) Baratang Island. The Middle Andaman Island was the most populated as per census 2011. The two islands - the Spike and the Porlob were found inhabited during 2001 census, but became uninhabited by 2011.
According to census 2011, there were three tehsils in the districts, namely Diglipur, Mayabunder, and Rangat. This District consists of three Community Development Blocks viz. Diglipur, Mayabunder and Rangat.
Diglipur Tehsil had 72 inhabited and 9 uninhabited villages which were spread over seven islands - Narcondam East, Land Fall, North Andaman, Smith, Curlew and Stewart Islands.
Mayabunder Tehsil had 47 inhabited and 3 uninhabited villages spread over three islands - Middle Andaman Island (Part), Aves, and Interview Island.
Rangat Tehsil had 79 inhabited and 17 uninhabited villages spread over five islands - Middle Andaman Island (Part), Long, North Passage, Strait, and Baratang Islands.
It is worth mentioning here that population of the areas of the district as per 2001 census was 105613. The Andamans district was comprised of 550 Islands, Islets and rocks out which only 26 are inhabited. The highest point of the old Andamans district was in the at Diglipur. There were four primitive tribes in Andamans and they have been recognised as belonging to the Negrito stock, namely Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas and Sentinelese.
