When a heavy (unstable) nucleus (e.g.: Uranium- 235, Plutonium-233 or Uranium- 233) splits into two small nuclei, then a very large amount of energy is released. It happens when a high energy neutron strikes the heavy nucleus, the splitting nucleus also emits two or more neutrons with energy. The process is called Nuclear Fission.
