P. Cornelius Scipio
P Cornelius Scipio (234-183 B.C.) the Elder, surnamed Africanus Major, was a celebrated Roman general. He was present at the engagement near the Tacinus and at Cannæ. He was appointed proconsul of Spain at the age of 24, and made himself master of nearly the whole of it against the Carthaginians. On his return to Rome was made consul. He transferred the seat of war against Carthage to Africa, and landed at Utica. He met Hannibal on the field of Zama, and totally defeated him, and ended the Second Punic War in 202 BC.Nearby pages
