Paratype


Every specimen in a type series other than the holotype (qv) which were before the author at the time of preparation of the original description and were so designated and indicated there.

According to the Code of zoological nomenclature, one of any number of specimens, in addition to the holotype, used by the original namer of a species in formulating his or her description of it a specimen, other than the holotype, on which the description of a new species is based.
