PATNA

PATNA is the capital city of the state of Bihar in India. It also headquarters the district of the same name. Patna City is another urban area in Patna.

The city is situated at the junction of the Son, the Gandak, and the Ganges, however most of the town is spread along the Ganges. It is admirably situated for commerce and has excellent railway communication, and trades largely in cotton, oil-seeds, and salt. It has many good buildings but there are many narrow streets. It has Government buildings, Patna College, a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a mosque, and other building of archaeological interests. At Dinapur, its military station, 6 miles to the west, mutiny broke out in 1857. It is famous for its rice, but this is largely a re-export.

Patna was once called Patliputra, which is among the world's oldest capital cities with unbroken history of many centuries as imperial metropolis of the Mauryas and Guptas imperial dynasties.
