Phek
Phek is a district in the State of Nagaland in India. The district is bounded by Myanmar in the East, Zunheboto and Tuensang districts in the North, Manipur state in the South and Kohima district in the West. Area of the district is 2026 sq km and Population 1,46,483 as per census 2001.There are five RD Blocks -KIKRUMA, PFUTSERO, SEKRUZU, PHEK, MELURI; and 89 villages in this district.
It is a hilly district rich in flora and fauna. there are three important rivers namely Tizu, Lanye, and Sedzu and three important lakes called Shilloi, Chida and Dzudu.
Summer is moderately warm and winter is cold. Monsoon sets in by the last week of May and retreats by the end of September.
It is inhabited by the Chakhesangs and Pochurys. The word "Chakhesang" an amalgamation of the names of three sub-tribes - "cha" from "Chokri", "khe" from "Khezha (Kuzha)" and "Sang" from "Sangtam (Pochury)". There are atleast three main lingustic group in the district, namely, Chokri , Khezha and Pochury. The medium of communication among the people is mainly Tenyidie and Nagamese.
Agriculture is the main occupation with 80.84 % of the population engaged in agriculture. Terrace Rice Cultivation (TRC) is predominant. Besides agriculture people engage in salt making (in Meluri area) weaving, bamboo and wood carving, and in making fruit juice.
History
Phek is derived from the word "Phekrekedze" meaning watch tower. Earlier a part of Kohima district, it was made a seperate district on December 21, 1973.Politics
