Philippe Egalité
Philippe Egalité (1747 - 1793), born Louis Philippe Joseph, also called Louis Philippe II, the Duke of Orleans was son of Louis Philippe I (1725 – 1785) when he was the Duke of Chartres, and father of Louis Philippe I (1773 – 1850) the king of the French. He was so called because he sided with the Republican party in the French Revolution of 1789, and whose motto was "Liberté, Fraternité, et Egalité." He was a cousin of King Louis XVI. Égalité voted for the death of Louis XVI. However, he was himself guillotined in 1793 during the Reign of Terror. His son also named Louis Philippe, later came to be known as Louis Philippe I the King of France after the July Revolution of 1830.Nearby pages
