Pierre D'Aubusson

Pierre D'Aubusson (1423-1503) was a French nobleman, the grand-master of the order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, of French descent. He served under the Emperor Sigismund against the Turks. He went to Rhodes, became a knight of St. John, and was chosen grand-master. In 1480, he gallantly defended Rhodes against 100,000 Turks, when besieged by Mahomet II. He drove the assailants back, and thus stayed the career of Mahomet II, who, after establishing himself in Constantinople, was threatening to overrun Europe.
