POONA

POONA, now Pune, is a city in Maharashtra, 119 m. by rail SE. of Mumbai.

It was formerly the chief military station in the Deccan, and in the hot season the centre of government in the Bombay Presidency during British Raj.

It was the capital of the Mahrattas, and was annexed by Britain in 1818. After independence in 1947, it became part of the state of Bombay, and after reorganisation of states in 1960, it became part of Maharshtra.
