Pulwama
Pulwama is a district in the State of Jammu and Kashmir in India. District Pulwama is situated at an altitude of 1500 to 2000 meters above mean sea level . The district lies between 35-55' and 34-15 north latitude , 35-15' east longitude. The total area of the district is 1398 Sq. Kmtrs.The district is surrounded by Hilly terrains , which are 2000 Mtrs. above sea level. As per altitude from sea level the district can be divided into three zones i.e. zone Ist falls upto the level of 1700 meters. zone 2nd falls between 1700 to 2000 mtrs. And zone 3rd above 2000 mtrs.
Pulwama is famous all over the world for the saffron cultivation which is mainly grown in the Karewa lands of Pampore, Kakapora and Pulwama blocks.The district is also called RICE BOWL of Kashmir for maximum production of rice grains in the J & K state.
As per 2001 census, the District Pulwama has a population of 4.42 lacs. The total literacy rate of the district is at 49.60%. It is 60.70% in respect of males and 37.70% in respect of females.
The climate in the district is temperate with mercury going 30o C in summer and below freezing point in winter.
History
District Pulwama came into being in the year 1979. Pulwama district comprised of 550 villages, which were grouped in 5 Tehsils viz. Shopian, Pulwama, Tral, Pampore & Awantipora. The district has been bifurcated in two parts viz. District Shopian & District Pulwama. In District Pulwama there are 4 tehsils, namely, Pulwama, Tral, Awantipora & Pampore. The total number of villages came down to 319 with 4 CD Blocks and part of Keller block. The reporting area of this district has been reduced to 0.67 lac Hectares from 0.98 Hectares after creation of the new Hill District, Shopian.Politics
