Rajendra Chola I (1016 - 1044) was the son of Rajaraja Chola. He was a warrior king. He extended the domination of the Chola kingdom beyond the sea.

He built a new capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram to commemorate his victory in the north of India.

Chola empire had a very efficient system of local self-government in villages.

It was during his reign the cultural expansion of India got momentum. It extended to Southeast Asia during 9th to 12th century.
