Rhodesia
Rhodesia, also the Republic of Rhodesia was an unrecognized state between 1970 and 1979. From 1980, it is the Republic of Zimbabwe. Formerly, it was the territory in South Africa occupied and administered by the British South Africa Company, under the leadership of Mr. Cecil Rhodes, and founded by royal charter in 1889, hence the name it goes under. It was then bounded on the East by Portuguese East Africa, on the North by German East Africa and the Congo Free State, on the West by Angola and German South-West Africa, and on the South by Bechuanaland and the Transvaal. The region was traversed by the Zambesi, which divided it into Northern and Southern Rhodesia. The Northern had been little prospected, though the land was being cultivated, crops raised, and cattle-breeding commenced, besides a new industry started in fibre. The Southern was divided into two provinces, Mashonaland and Matabeleland.Nearby pages
