Riga

Riga is a seaport city and the capital of Latvia. It is situated on the Dwina, 7 miles from its entrance into the Gulf of Riga, a spacious inlet on the East side of the Baltic. It has some fine mediæval buildings. It is the seat of an archbishop, and is a busy and growing commercial and manufacturing town, exporting grain, timber, flax, linseed, wool, &c.

Riga was founded in 1201. Historically, it was the capital of the region of Livonia. Livonian Order was formed in 1237. From 1435 to 1561 it was a member of Livonian Confederation. Thereafter, it was Imperial Free City 1561–1582, under Poland–Lithuania 1582–1629, under Swedish Empire 1629–1721, under Russian Empire 1721–1917, under German Empire 1917–1918, under Republic of Latvia 1918–1940, under Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) 1940–1941, under Nazi Germany 1941–1944, under Latvian SSR 1944–1990. From 1990, it is the capital of the Republic of Latvia.
