Roger Ascham

Roger Ascham (1515-1568) was an English humanist scholar and writier, a Yorkshireman, Fellow of Cambridge, a good classical, and particularly Greek, scholar. He was also a tutor and Latin secretary to Queen Elizabeth, and much esteemed by her. He is noted for his treatise on archery, a book, deemed a classic on the subject, entitled "Toxophilus" (1545), for which Henry VIII settled a pension on him. His chief work, the "Schoolmaster" (1570), published posthumously, is an admirable treatise, a practical and influential tract on education, held in high regard by Dr. Johnson, the sum of which is 'docendo discas', "learn by teaching".
