Roger Bacon

Roger Bacon (c.1214-1294) was an English philosopher, scientist, and a Franciscan monk best known for his emphasis on the need for an empirical approach to scientific study. He is also known his notable works in optics.

Roger Bacon was born at Ilchester, Somerset. He was a fearless truth-seeker of great scientific attainments. However, he was accused of magic, convicted and condemned to imprisonment, from which he was released only to die.

He had suggested several scientific inventions, such as the telescope, the air-pump, the diving-bell, the camera obscura, and gunpowder, and wrote some eighty treatises.
