S. Jaipal Reddy is a member of Parliament of India representing Andhra Pradesh in Lok Sabha. This is his 5th term in the 15th Lok Sabha. He was born on 16th January 1942, in Madgul, Distt. Mahbubnagar (Andhra Pradesh). He is a post graduate in English Literature and also holds degree of Bachelor of Journalism. He studied at Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Earlier, Shri Reddy was president of Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress from 1965-71, General Secretary, AP Congress Committee in 1969-72. He was member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly since 1969-84 (four terms) and became member of National Executive Janata Party in1979. Shri Jaipal Reddy was elected to 8th Lok Sabha in 1984. He was a member of Rajya Sabha in 1990-96 and 1997-1999. He took charge as the Union Cabinet Minister for Information & Broadcasting in 1997-98. He was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 1998 and to 13th Lok Sabha (3rd term) in 1999. He was also conferred with Best Parliamentation Award in 1998. He held various positions as Member, Committee on Finance; Member, Committee on provision of Computers to MPs and Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Finance. He was also the Chairman of Committee of Privileges from 1999-2000 and member, Joint Committee on Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999. From 2000-2004 he was Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Power. In 2004, Shri Reddy was re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha (4th term). He again assumed charge as Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture on 23rd May 2004 and took charge as Urban Development Minister in November 2005. The Present charge of the Minister for Urban Development is Shri Reddy’s second term in succession in the Ministry of Urban Development.
His favourite pastime is reading and is widely travelled. He is married and has two sons and one daughter.
