S. Luke Fildes

Sir Samuel Luke Fildes (1843 - 1927) was a British artist, painter and illustrator, born in Lancashire. He made his mark first as a designer of woodcuts. He contributed to various magazines and illustrated books, notably Dickens's "Edwin Drood". His most noted pictures are "Applicants for a Casual Ward," "The Widower," and "The Doctor". He was made an R.A. (Royal Academician) in 1887.
