Samuel Seabury

Samuel Seabury (1729-1796) was an American prelate, born at Groton, Connecticut, graduated at Yale and studied medicine in Edinburgh. He entered the Church of England in 1753, and devoted himself at first to missionary work. He subsequently held "livings" in Long Island and New York State in 1782. He was appointed bishop by the clergy of Connecticut. He sought consecration at the hands of the English archbishops who were afraid to grant it, and had to resort to the bishops of the Scotch Episcopal Church for the purpose. He did notable work in establishing and consolidating Episcopacy in America.
