Sexually transmitted infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)are infections that are spread primarily through person-to-person sexual contact such as sexual intercourse, oral sex and anal sex. There are more than 30 different sexually transmissible bacteria, viruses and parasites.

The symptoms of STIs may include -
i.Itching around the vagina and/or discharge from the vagina in women
ii.Discharge from the penis in men
iii. Pain during sex or when urinating
iv. Painless red sores on the genital area
v. Soft flesh coloured warts around genital area
vi. Pain in or around the anus for people who have anal sex
vii. Unusual infections, unexplained fatigue, night sweats and weight loss.

The most common conditions they cause are gonorrhoea, chlamydial infection, syphilis, trichomoniasis, chancroid, genital herpes, genital warts, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and hepatitis B infection.

Several, in particular HIV and syphilis, can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth, and through blood products and tissue transfer.
