SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH

SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH (1803-1887), eminent mechanician, born at Stockport; the rival of Lord Armstrong in the invention of ordnance; invented artillery of great range and accuracy; was made a baronet in 1869.
