Somme

Somme is:
1. A river of North France. It rises in the department of Aisne, near St. Quentin, and flows 150 miles southwest and northwest to the English Channel. It is navigable as far as Abbeville.

2. A department of North France, fronting the English Channel, between Seine-Inférieure in the South and Pas-de-Calais in the North. It is one of the most prosperous agricultural and manufacturing districts of France. Amiens is the chief town of this department.
