!Sonitpur district Sonitpur is a district of the state of Assam in India. It is home to 73 tea gardens including world's biggest tea garden, Monabari. It is the second largest district of Assam in area after Karbi Anglong district, and the third largest in population after Nagaon and Dhubri . The district is located on the northern banks of Brahmaputra in between Longitude range 92° 16’ East - 93° 43’ East and Latitude range 26° 30’ North - 27° 01’ North. It is bounded in the north by Arunachal Pradesh, in the south by River Brahmaputra, in the east by Lakhimpur District, and in the west by Darrang District. Tezpur is Sonitpur's largest town and the largest urban centre on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. It is situated at about 180 km northeast of Guwahati. It is considered the cultural capital of Assam. Some of the state’s greatest icons – Filmmaker-musician-poet Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and balladeer Bhupen Hazarika – are associated with the town. A serene town, Tezpur is famous for its beautiful parks, ancient Hindu temples and archaeological ruins steeped in mythology, legend and folklore. The population of Sonitpur district is 19, 24,110 as per 2011 Census, and is is spread over an area of 5324 sq km. It is also home to several natural beauty and wildlife hotspots with number of such wildlife sanctuaries, national parks are situated in and around Sonitpur. It came into existence in 1983 after its being carved our from Darrang District. Major Rivers of the district are Brahmaputra, Ziabharali , Gabharu, Borgang, and Buroi. Total Forest Cover in the district is 1420 sq km. The district has three sub-divisions, eight Circles/ Tehsils, 14 Community Development (C.D.) Blocks, and 1615 villages (including 19 under BTAD).
