South Andaman

South Andaman is a district in the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. Population of this district as per census 2011 was 238142. It is located in the Bay of Bengal Region in between longitude E 92° to E 94°’ and latitude N 6°’ to N 14°’. The Total Area of the District is 2980 sq km. Forest Area in this district is 2613.53 sq.km.

South Andaman district came into existence on 18th August 2006 by dividing the erstwhile Andaman District into two districts - South Andaman and North & Middle Andaman. Port Blair is the district headquarter since 1789, originally, Port Cornwallis.

According to census 2011, this district has one subdivision of the same name headquartered at Port Blair; 3 tehsils namely Port Blair, Ferrargunj, and Little Andaman; and 99 villages. This District consists of three Community Development Blocks viz. Ferrargunj, Prothrapur and Little Andaman.

Port Blair Tehsil consists of 30 inhabited and 3 uninhabited villages spread over the islands namely South Andaman (Part), Havelock, Neil, Rutland, and North Sentinel. Port Blair is the capital city of the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Ferrargunj Tehsil consistes of 62 inhabited and 14 uninhabited villages spread over two Islands - South Andaman (Part), and Flat Bay.

Little Andaman Tehsil was carved out from Port Blair Tehsil on August 17 having the islands falling between 10 degree channel to 11 degree 5' North Latitude and 94 degree 20' to 92 degree East Longitude. It consists of 16 inhabited and 3 uninhabited villages, and is situated around 104 km away from the main South Andaman Islands with headquarters at Hut Bay.

The district has seven inhabited islands - (1) South Andaman Island (2) Flat Bay Island (3) Havelock Island (4) Neil Island (5) Rutland Island (6) North Sentinel Island, and (7) Little Andaman Island. The South Andaman Island is the most populated while the Flat Bay is the least populated. The Viper Cinque and John Lawrence Islands were found to be inhabited in 2001, but became uninhabited in 2011.

There are four primitive tribes in the South Andamans District and they have been recognised as belonging to the Negrito stock, namely Onges,Jarawas,Great Andamanese and sentinalese. The District of South Andaman has three tehsils namely "Port Blair"," Ferrargunj","Little Andaman".
