Soviet Union

Soviet Union, full name Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was a former federation of communist republics having its capital at Moscow. It was created from the Russian Empire in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The republic occupied the northern half of Asia and part of eastern Europe making it the largest country of the world. It emerged as superpower after the Word War II, and its rivalry with the United States led to a prolonged Cold War between the two. However, economic failure and repression of its own citizen led to its dissolution in 1991. A looser confederation then came into being called the Commonwealth of Independent States. Some of its constituents joined this new confederation.
