ST. AGNES
ST. AGNES (c. 291 – c. 304) was a patron saint of virgins. This virgin saint of Rome suffered martyrdom under Diocletian in 303 or 304. She was beheaded because the flames would not touch her body. Her emblem is an angus (a lamb). She is, therefore, represented in art as holding a palm-branch in her hand and a lamb at her feet or in her arms. Festival, Jan. 21.
