St Anselm

St Anselm (c. 1033-1109) was a monk, philosopher, theologian, an Abbot, and archbishop of Canterbury during 1093-1109. He is known for his ontological arguments in his book Proslogion. This English philosopher and theologian was a native of Aosta, in Piedmont, but was born in Italy. He was an able, high-principled, God-fearing man, and a calmly resolute upholder of the teaching and authority of the Church.

He visited England frequently, gained the favour of King Rufus, who appointed him to succeed Lanfranc. However, he quarrelled with Rufus and left the country, but returned at the request of Henry I. A quarrel with him about investiture ended in a compromise.

Feast day in his honour is observed on April 21.
