St Bonaventura

St Bonaventura (1221-1274) was an Intalian cardinal, surnamed the Seraphic Doctor, his real name John Fidenza, born in Tuscany. He entered the Franciscan Order. He was chosen general of the Order and papal legate at the Council of Lyons in 1274, during the session of which he died. He was a mystic in theology, and was ascribed knowledge of the truth to union with God, such as existed between man and his Maker prior to the Fall, a state which could be recovered only by a life of purity and prayer. His writings were admired by Luther.
