St Étienne

St Étienne is an important busy industrial town of France. It is the capital of the department of the Loire, on the Furens, 35 miles southwest of Lyons. The town has been called the "Birmingham of France".

It is the chief seat of the iron-works of France and also has noted ribbon factories. It is in the centre of a rich coal district, and produces every kind of hardware. There is a school of mines.
