St Thomas's
St Thomas's is a handsome hospital on the South side of the Thames, opposite Westminster, at Lambeth. Originally located in Southwark, but based in Lambeth since 1871, the hospital has provided healthcare freely or under charitable auspices since the 12th century (after 1173). The monastery that was running the hospital was dissolved in 1539 during the Reformation and the hospital closed but reopened in 1551. After obtaining grant for the site in London in 1553, and with an annual revenue of £40,000, the hospital started its onward journey and it has remained open ever since. However the hospital left Southwark in 1862 and shifted to its new buildings on the present site at Lambeth in 1871.Nearby pages
