Stokely Carmichael

Stokely Carmichael (1941-1998), born Stokely Standiford Churchill Carmichael, also known as Kwame Toure, was a US political activist. He was born in Trinidad; joined civil rights movement as college student; became field organizer and, later, chair for student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe (NSCC) (1966-67). He launched black power movement (1966), explained in Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America (1967; with Charles Hamilton). He advocated armed revolution and initially worked with Black Panthers, but broke from party in 1969. He moved to Guinea (1969), worked for Pan-Africa movement, and changed name.
