SUKKUR
SUKKUR, a town in Pakistan on the Indus (here spanned by a fine bridge), 28 m. SE. of Shikarpur; has rail communication with Karachi and Afghanistan, and considerable trade in various textiles, opium, saltpetre, sugar, &c.; 1 m. distant is Old Sukkur; the island of Bukkur, in the river-channel and affording support to the bridge.It was formerly occupied and fortified by the British during their rule which ended in 1947 after independence of India and formation of Pakistan.
