SUKKUR

SUKKUR, a town in Pakistan on the Indus (here spanned by a fine bridge), 28 m. SE. of Shikarpur; has rail communication with Karachi and Afghanistan, and considerable trade in various textiles, opium, saltpetre, sugar, &c.; 1 m. distant is Old Sukkur; the island of Bukkur, in the river-channel and affording support to the bridge.

It was formerly occupied and fortified by the British during their rule which ended in 1947 after independence of India and formation of Pakistan.
