Sullurupet

Sullurupet is a village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is famous for Chengalamma Temple. It lies 100 km away from Nellore on the Kolkata-Chennai highway.

Goddess Chengalamma Parameswari manifested Herself in the village. The temple for Her was built on the bank of the Kanlangi river. History tells us that it was established during the fourth and fifth centuries. People also refer to her as the village goddess “Tenkali”. With the passage of time, she is being worshipped regularly by devotees as Chengalamma. “Chengalamma Jatara” (fair) is held at this place.

The goddess here is also known as Sullurupet Chengalamma Thalli and her idol in the temple faces the sea. The idol is naturally-formed and adorns the hanging roots (vooda) of the banyan tree.
