SULU ISLANDS

SULU ISLANDS, an archipelago of 162 islands in Asiatic waters, lying to the NE. of Borneo, and extending to the Philippines.

After 1946 it is in Philippines, after its independence. However, formerly, it belonged to the Spaniards who, in 1876, subdued the piratical Malay inhabitants.

The region trades in pearls and edible nests is mainly carried on by Chinese.
