In pre - Christian Egyptian culture one of the seven planets, the Sun was given a great importance and assigned the day to it. Thus the day derives its name Sunday. Sunday is traditionally (Judaeo - Christian tradition) the first day of the week. However, the International Standardization Organization has recommended Monday as the first day of the week and many countries has already ratified this recommendation, making it the seventh day of the week. Sunday is set for divine worship by the Christian religion mainly in commemoration of Christ's resurrection. New Testament replaced the Jewish Sabbath, when Paul and the Christians of Troas gathered on the first day of the week to "break bread" (Acts 20), and it is called "the Lord's day" (Rev 1).
