Surendranath Banerjee

Surendranath Banerjee (1848 - 1925), also Sir Surendranath Banerjea, popularly known as Rashtraguru (literally the Teacher of the Nation) was an Indian nationalist. He was founder of the Calcutta Indian Association (1876); editor of "the Bengali" (1879-1921); and initiator of the Indian National Congress as one of its founder members. He was also member of the Central Legislature, but eventually broke with the Congress due to its extremist slant. Unlike Congress, he supported Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, and later left INC and founded National Liberation Federation in 1919. He had also founded a nationalist organisation named Indian National Association.
