Sycorax

Sycorax was a hag in the "Tempest", a play by William Shakespeare. She was mother of Caliban. She is a vicious and powerful witch in the play but remained an unseen character. She lived in the island where Prospero the hero of the play was stranded. Sycorax, while pregnant with Caliban, was banished from her home in Algiers to the island on which the play takes place. She died several years before the main action of the play begins.
