TAI-WAN, now known as Taipei, is the capital city of the island of Taiwan, formerly known as FORMOSA. It is officially the Republic of China which is different from the People's Republic of China or mainland China. The People's Republic of China threatens the use of military force as a response to any formal declaration of Taiwanese independence,

It is an important commercial emporium, situated about 3 m. from the SW. coast, on which, however, it has a port, ranking as a treaty-port.
