Tawang District

Tawang is a district in Arunachal Pradesh, a state of India. The district is bordered by Tibet in the North and Bhutan in the South-West. Sela ranges separate West Kameng district in the East. Tawang town is the headquarters of this district.

This district derives its name from some bearings on surroundings. However, it is said that this area was given the name 'Tawang' by Mera Lama in the 17th century. The district came into existence in October 1984 by carving in out from West Kameng district.

It is spread over an area of approximately 2,172 sq km. Population of the district as per census 2011 was 49,977.

The inhabitants of the districts are mainly Monpa tribes, except in Shyo village which is dominated by people of Tibetian origin.
